Class 1: Pedal-assist, max 20 mph. Class 2: Throttle-assist, max 20 mph. Class 3: Pedal-assist, max 28 mph (must be 16+). Over 20 mph on throttle alone = e-motorcycle (requires license + endorsement).
Starting May 5, 2027: ages 8-15 must ride under adult supervision OR complete an online safety course at recreation.utah.gov.
Utah law requires riders to keep both hands on the handlebars at all times.
No carrying passengers beyond what the device is designed for.
Ride as far right as practicable, in the same direction as traffic. May take the full lane when unsafe at the edge.
Cyclists may treat stop signs as yield signs: slow down, yield to traffic and pedestrians with right of way, proceed only when safe.
Required: white front light visible from 500 ft (solid, not flashing), red rear light or reflector visible from 500 ft.
Required at least 2 seconds before turning or stopping. Left arm out = LEFT TURN. Right arm out (or left arm bent up) = RIGHT TURN. Left arm bent down = STOPPING.
Legal in most of Utah unless prohibited locally. On sidewalks: yield to pedestrians, safe speed, audible signal when passing.
Riding impaired = same DUI consequences as a car. Police can impound an e-bike if a minor is found violating safety laws.
